Formula SAE is the brainchild of the Society of Automotive Engineers International and is run primarily on the basis of producing graduate students with real-life project experience. It has been successfully run in the United States for the past 27 years, in Great Britain for seven years and was held for the first time in Australasia two years ago. The long-term success of the competition in the US and UK has established Formula SAE-A as a plausible and challenging project experience.

The concept of the competition is for students to be involved in every aspect of creating a hypothetical company which has been commissioned to design, build and test a marketable and profitable formula style open-wheel race car. The target market is the non-professional weekend racer.

The competition is for students to conceive, design, fabricate and compete in a small formula-style racing car. The cars are judged in three different categories of: static inspection and engineering design; solo performance trials; and high-performance track endurance.
