August - UWA Expo

Click the image for the full gallery

UWA has its annual Expo every year in August where the campus opens its doors to the public to show what studying at UWA is like.

UWA Motorsport not only opened its doors but also opened some eyes! We usually like to put on a dynamic display on James Oval's grass but this year we changed things a little. The static display remained on James with our older cars and trophies on display for the public to see. But the dynamic display made a dramatic move to the driveway leading up to the Molecular and Chemical Sciences Building delivery area.

We wanted to ensure the public saw what these amazing cars can really do, with the grass displays in past years not showing the full potential of the purpose built race-cars.

UWA Motorsport traveled to the annual Presbyterian Ladies College Career's Expo held on their campus. The purpose of the expo is for universities to showcase the degrees on offer at their institutions. UWA Motorsport held the flag for Mechanical Engineering presenting the caliber of education that UWA provides.

July - Students from China visit UWAM

Students from Nanjing Langya Primary school in The People's Republic of China visited the UWA Motorsport Lab in late July. They visited UWA as part of a huge tour of Australia. See the July edition of UWAM Express for more details.

July - UWAM travels to Albany

As part of the UWA Motorsport team's community outreach program, we traveled down to Albany to visit the UWA campus and talk to the students from Albany SHS, North Albany SHS and Great Southern Grammar . It was fantastic to be able to show students in these rural areas of Western Australia what is on offer if they choose to study in Perth.

We soon found out that there are a lot of eager and very switched-on young people in rural areas who are very enthusiastic about taking on further study after high-school. UWA Motorsport once again explained what life on campus is like for students and how fulfilling it can be, with particular emphasis on the value of extra-curricular activities such as the Motorsport program.

After a run-down on what the program offers and its many merits, we allowed the the students to sit in the 2006 car to see what it's like to be a race-car driver for the team. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip down south and look forward to seeing some familiar faces at uni in future years.

July - UWA Motorsport at Supertrucks

As with UWA Motorsport tradition, we headed down to Barbagallo Raceway in Wanneroo to the annual Supertrucks event organised by the WA Sporting Car Club.

Our prayers of fine weather after some disastrous storms during the week were answered and we spent a beautiful day talking to people about the program.

We took our prized 2006 race car with us to show interested onlookers what UWA Motorsport is all about. Our small light-weight car was quite a contrast to the giants that were zipping around on the race-track!

July - UWA Motorsport takes part in Campus Challenge

It is that time of year again where the University hosts a set of tours of the various faculties for high-school students. The students stay at the St Catherine's College across the road from UWA and attend tours that are given by the vast variety of faculties that exist on campus. As we do every year, UWA Motorsport eagerly put our hand up and gave two tours of the lab on Wednesday.

We gave a brief overview of what the team is about and then gave a tour of all the labs and the testing facilities, along with showing off all of the yellow rockets we have built over the years. There is a surprise look on the student's faces when they walk into a lab where 5 bright-yellow race cars are standing!

UWA Motorsport thoroughly enjoyed showing the students around and are always keen to promote the team, the university and the concept of hard work and its rewards.

June - Kalamunda SHS visits UWAM

As part of the huge interest generated by UWA Motorsport at the university, we were once again asked to provide a tour for the students from Kalamunda SHS. As part of the University's high-school program the marketing department conduct tours of the various faculties to give students a taste of what university can offer them. But no tour is complete without a visit to the UWA Motorsport lab where some of the best formula SAE cars in the world are built.

We once again thoroughly enjoyed talking to the students and wish them all the best in their studies.

June - Racer-roos visit UWA Motorsport

The boys from Wesley College, F1 in Schools WA Champions for 2007, came down to visit the Formula SAE World Champions today in the workshop. Ayrton showed the soon-to-be racers what it is to take a step up to University-level racing. After showing off some of the past cars, they were shown how we design our race-cars on computer and the conceptual part of making a car. We certainly hope they don't sell that info to other teams!!

We thoroughly enjoyed seeing the guys again and encourage anyone who is interested to come down to the lab.

May - F1 in Schools Breifing

On Wednesday 28th May a number of the UWA Motorsport boys set off to Midland Tafe for the F1 in Schools briefing. This year, a number of us from UWA Motorsport have been linked up with high-schools in and around Perth to act as a point of contact for the students. Click here for a more in-depth explanation and pictures of the event or here for the official website.

May - Triple S Fair

This year's Triple S Fair (Science for School Students) was held at Swan Christian College. UWA Motorsport was again invited to show off it's impressive race-cars, which are always a hit with the high-school students. These events are great as they show young people the wide opportunities after high-school and that building high-performance race-cars can be part of higher education!

May - V8 Supercars

Round 5 of the V8 Supercars was held at Barbagallo Raceway with the WA Sporting Car Club allowing us to set up a static display in the Merchandise Area. It was great to present the car to all the eager race fans. UWA Motorsport cars may not have the top-end speed of the V8's but they'll beat them to 100!

May - ASPIRE

ASPIRE is a series of talks held by the UWA Student Services for high-school students, encouraging them to ASPIRE for higher education. UWA Motorsport was asked to make a presence during the lunch break between the presentations being shown to the students. Mike, our project manager also gave a presentation to the students after lunch, explaining the benefits of UWA Motorsport and studying engineering at UWA. More...

May - First Year course advisory day

UWA Motorsport was asked to come along to the annual First Year Course Advisory Day representing Mechanical Engineering and guiding the students in their first year of study. The students find it extremely useful to talk to the team, usually uncovering hidden interests in certain engineering disciplines through the UWA Motorsport team.

April - WISE

UWA hold a number of tours every year especially for girls from local and regional high-schools to encourage them into studying engineering or science. This year's enormous demand for the tours, following last year's excellent turnout, meant that 3 separate tours, held over two days, needed to be run due to the huge interest from the girls. We showed them what a race team does and they had a sit in the cars, showing huge enthusiasm for the field of science and engineering. Some of them couldn't wait to graduate high-school and work for UWA Motorsport!

April - Perth Motorshow

Once again UWA Motorsport attended the Perth Motorshow held at the convention centre. We would like to thank Premiere Events for giving us an excellent spot at the show, where we received a huge amount of attention from the attendees and exhibitors alike. It was a great show for all!

April - Ian Hamilton Farewell

Ian Hamilton, who was head technician for the Mechanical Engineering workshop for over 20 years is retiring and UWA Motorsport held a farewell BBQ to commemorate his leaving. UWA Motorsport are forever grateful to Ian as he has played a huge part in the team since the program began in 2001. Ian will be sorely missed and we all wish him the best in his future ventures.

March - Smokefree Night Series

The Western Australia Sporting Car Club kindly invited us to put on a static and dynamic display at the Smokefree Night Series event held in early March. UWA Motorsport put on a great display as a feature during one of the breaks and showed the crowd how race-cars should look like!

February - UWA Fresher days

The end of February is a time where students who have just come from high-school and are starting their first year come to the university to orientate themselves. This includes showing them all the clubs and societies that the university has to offer, which is something it is very proud of. UWA Motorsport came out in force and arranged itself on James Oval as did other clubs and there was huge interest in the motorsport program from the eager freshers!

February - Victory Celebration BBQ
